Chariton is a community of 4600 people located at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 34 & State Hwy.14 in South Central Iowa. Chariton is the county seat of Lucas County. We are less than 30 minutes to I-35 and less than 60 minutes to Des Moines - Iowa's capital. The quality of life is attracting a growing number of people back to Iowa and Lucas Co. to enjoy the rural experience.
Chariton, Iowa "A place we call home" is much more than a slogan. To those of us who live in Iowa and in Chariton particular, it is the secure knowledge that this is where we want to be. We live at a slower pace. We breathe clean air and drink clean water. We have a milder four-season climate and some of the finest scenery in Iowa is located here. Our children are educated in schools that are not overcrowded or violence prone. We have a community college here and are within commuter distance to a college or university.
We live and work among friends, not strangers. A lot of our living is done outdoors. The ponds, streams, lakes and park areas are a vital part of why we live here. If you are tired of concrete and stoplights, you must experience the natural wonders of our area for yourself. See how much room we have for living and growing. Come and be a part of us!
