Has been a local hangout for the dogs of Ames, Story City, Roland and surrounding communities of Iowa. For over 10 years, your canine companions have become part of our family while you travel to distant ports of call. "THE HAVEN" is a Family operated Business directed by Dr. Scott, DVM,PhD

Our roots in this business are deep. As a youngster, Scott and his family raised and showed Collies, these dogs provided him with hours of entertainment, companionship and likely planted seeds for his future profession. Our first "child" as a married couple, was MANDY , the matriarch of all those friendly English Springer Spaniels greeting you at our entrance. A few years later our first son, Anders, arrived, Mandy took her guardian, protector job seriously and rarely left his side. Naturally, he became fond of her and all dogs. As friends began to notice his way with dogs, they asked him to watch after their dogs while they traveled. In 1992, he began the first Hound Haven located in Colorado at age 8.
Five children and 3 Springers later found us in our present lovely country location near Story City, Iowa. The buildings lent themselves perfectly to beginning another small kennel. With some added equipment and construction, Anders, now age 14, designed and created HURD'S HOUND HAVEN, Iowa which officially opened May, 1999.
In February, 2006, a tragic fire destroyed our original Iowa kennel. Despite that trial, we seized the opportunity to face those odds head on with faith and hope for the future. Launching from over 15 years of kennel experience, our family, now numbering 10, chose to design and build what we believed to be the "perfect" Dog vacation spot.
From youngest, 7 yrs to oldest 25 years, (Mom and Dad not counting) , our family provides affectionate personal care to your canine family members. From providing fresh water several times a day (7y.o job), to leisurely country style walks, a good old rub down on the way in or out to the exercise areas, our goal as a staff is to create that comfortable home like atmosphere. Laughter fills our dining room with dog tales, (we never talk about people), dogs are entertainment enough!
