What is emergency contraception?
This is a type of birth control used after unprotected intercourse. The morning after pill is available over the counter to women 18 or older. This is a progesterone only pill so can be used by women who have a contraindication to regular birth control pills. It must be started within 72 hours after exposure. The sooner it is used the more effective it is. It reduces the chance of pregnancy by 75%. Side effects are nausea/vomiting, headaches, cramps and irregular bleeding. If you are unable to take hormone of any kind, an IUD is an option if placed within 5 to 7 days
