Bishop's Letter October 19, 2010
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP FLYER
In response to the Faithful Citizenship bulletin insert you have received in recent weeks, I have several times been asked why the Iowa bishops are in favor of the mandated ballot question on a constitutional convention, and about the ballot measure for retention of three Iowa Supreme Court justices. As we approach the elections on November 2, I hope this letter will be clear and instructive to all the faithful.
First, very briefly, let me review the most basic truths Christ teaches about political involvement. We know, of course, that the Kingdom of God is not of this world. If we belong to Christ, we do not belong to the prince of this world. Our true citizenship is in Heaven, not in any temporal kingdom or state.
Yet, even given full submission to our Lord Jesus Christ, how we live in the world matters greatly. Political structures and outcomes have consequences, for good or ill. Good politics and good laws favor the common good; bad politics and bad laws injure the common good. Natural virtues like humility, prudence, generosity, hospitality to the weak and to strangers, self-restraint in exercising power, and respect for human life and dignity, will all be either fostered or hindered by our laws, policies, and institutions.

Catholic schools receive
Msgr. Lafferty Foundation funds Visit The Catholic Globe's website

Checks totaling more than $1.89 million went out to diocesan Catholic schools last week. These funds represent dollars distributed as student tuition grants to Catholic families through the Msgr. Lafferty Tuition Foundation. According to Marilyn Wellman, diocesan accountant, nearly 2,200 students received grants through this tuition foundation for the 2010-2011 school year. There are over 150 more recipients this year than last year, said Wellman, who added that about $50,000 more was awarded through the fund. She pointed out that the majority of the funds were awarded last spring and families had learned what assistance their children received by mid-May. Just recently a second round of grants was awarded to families new to the diocesan Catholic schools. MORE

DAA benefits the whole Diocese

Its fall and that means the Diocesan Annual Appeal is just around the corner.
The Diocese of Sioux City will kick off the 2010 Diocesan Annual Appeal the weekend of Sept. 11-12.
The goal for the 2010 campaign will be $1.5 million, the same as last year. The amount raised for the 2009 campaign was $1,455,000 just $45,000 short of the goal.
We were just short of reaching the $1.5 million last year, said Kristie Arlt, director of communications and stewardship for the diocese. I am so pleased how people are giving despite our economic climate right now.
