Hygienic Lab first to receive new CDC award for outreach and training
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has presented its first "Outstanding Sentinel Clinical Laboratory Training Program" award to the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa.
Every year, an estimated 76 million Americans get sick from foodborne illnesses after eating foods contaminated with organisms such as E. coli and Salmonella. Of those affected, 300,000 require hospitalization and 5,000 die as a result of these illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In recent years, tainted foods like beef, eggs, peanut butter and spinach have been the source of regional and national outbreaks. The State Hygienic Laboratory's sixth annual Fall Professional Forum for clinical laboratorians will focus on organisms that cause these illnesses.
