Welcome to Sayre Montessori School
OUR MISSION STATEMENT "To provide a holistic education based on the Montessori Philosophy assisting each individual to develop his/her fullest potential while moving toward responsible, respectful behavior as an independent member of the world community."
Sayre Montessori School opened in the Fall of 1992 to give children a creative atmosphere in which to learn, develop, grow to their potential, and succeed. In the first year of operation, 22 students from four to nine years of age enrolled in mixed-age classrooms. Those classes met in one of the students' homes for the first six weeks. Then the school was moved into a 50-year-old remodeled house at the corner of Vine Street and Grand Avenue in West Des Moines.
The school added an Upper (level) Elementary in 1993, followed by a middle school in 1994. In 1995, Sayre enrolled its first 3-year-old students. Sayre Montessori School seeks to maintain cultural and economic diversity in its student population and student/teacher ratio of 12:1.
In the 1997-98 school year, the development of an outdoor classroom was established. The school sold the Vine Street property in 2002 and moved into the quarters on 28th Street in West Des Moines. This move marked the first step towards growth and development, upgrading its environment for the long term.
